The Deal of a Lifetime: Gounod's 'Faust'

THE HIT SINGLE:  "Salut! demeure chaste et peure"

Early in Act Three, when Faust first visits Marguerite, he's taken by her modest circumstances and sings movingly about her "chaste and pure dwelling."  Listen for the rich colors provided by the solo violin's gentle countermelody, and for tenor Charles Castronovo's subtle yet thrilling transition from full to soft voice at the aria's climactic moment.

THE B SIDE:  "Il ne revient pas"

As Act Four begins, Marguerite (soprano Irina Lungu) has born Faust's child, but he has abandoned her, and she's been shunned by the other women of the village.  Alone and disconsolate, she sings, "He does not return."
