Learning History's Lessons: Mussorgsky's 'Khovanshchina'

The Introduction

THE HIT SINGLE:  "Dawn on the Moscow River"

Mussorgsky left Khovanshchina unorchestrated at his death, in 1881, so it's ironic that the opera's most famous number is its orchestral introduction, "Dawn on the Moscow River."  The Vienna production presented here uses an orchestration made in 1958 by Dmitri Shostakovich.
