Handel's Cosmopolitan Connections, on Display in 'Rodelinda'

THE HIT SINGLE:  "Ah beloved, our final farewell ..."

Act Two ends as Grimoaldo condemns Bertarido (countertenor Iestyn Davies) to death, and then leaves him alone with Rodelinda (soprano Rebecca Evans) to say a final goodbye.  The result is a meltingly beautiful duet that's one of Handel's most moving numbers.

THE B SIDE:  "Tyrant, I spare thee ..."

Near the end of the opera, Bertarido spares Grimoaldo, in a display of vocal virtuosity that's also among the finest examples of the so-called Baroque, "stand-and-deliver" aria.
