Donizetti Meets Cable TV, in 'Lucrezia Borgia'

THE HIT SINGLE:  " Di pescatore ignobile ..."

The centerpiece of the Prologue is a long scene for Lucrezia and Genarro (Elena Mosuc and tenor Charles Castronovo). Genarro describes his presumed origins as the son of a humble fisherman, and longs for the mother he never knew; Lucrezia sympathizes, but doesn't reveal her identity.

THE B SIDE:  "Era desso ..."

As the opera ends, Gennaro is dead and Lucrezia (soprano Elena Mosuc) mourns with the moving aria "Era desso il figlio mio" -- "He was my son" -- leading directly to the bombastic finale.
