Shakespeare at the Opera: Verdi's 'Macbeth'

THE INTRO

THE HIT SINGLE: "Sleepwalking Scene"

Act Four features one of Verdi's most vivid sequences. As her doctor and lady-in-waiting listen in horror, a sleepwalking Lady Macbeth (mezzo-soprano Jennifer Larmore) graphically describes all the blood that was spilled to help Macbeth gain and keep the throne of Scotland.

THE B SIDE: "The Light is Fading"

In Act Two, when Macbeth and his wife decide that Banco and his son are both threats to the throne, and must be murdered, Lady Macbeth sings the atmospheric aria "La luce langue" -- "The Light is Fading."
