Storms and Salvation: Wagner's 'The Flying Dutchman'

THE HIT SINGLE:  "Die Frist is um"

Toward the beginning of the opera, the Dutchman (bass-baritone Juha Uusitalo) comes ashore for the first time in seven years, and sings his dramatic monologue "Die Frist ist um" -- "The term is up." He's convinced that he'll never find the true love that would free him from his curse, and that his only salvation will be judgment day, and the end of the world.

THE B SIDE:  "Steuermann!  Lass die Wacht"

As Daland's crew is returning to port, and anticipating a joyful homecoming, they sing a boisterous chorus, saying "Steersman! Leave your watch."
